偉大的荷蘭畫家林布蘭特(Rembrandt van Rijn, 1606-1669)的《夜警(Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, Known as the ‘Night Watch,’ 1642)》(現藏阿姆斯特丹荷蘭國立博物館(Rijksmuseum))，展現荷蘭共和國民兵團自豪的公民群像；而其系列自畫像(Self Portraits)、以及各種人物肖像畫如《西克斯先生肖像(Portrait of Jan Six, 1654)》(私人收藏)等，深刻呈現人物內在情感與心理狀態，彷彿能夠透視人心，讓觀者強烈感受到對人類各種際遇的同情與省思。
